Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any prominent awards ceremony approaches, one notices a clamor to include additional classifications to recognize unsung work and delight the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge game development, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
